At the completion of the 2004 season, Holtz declared his retirement on November 18, 2004; the Clemson-South Carolina fight happened two days later, on November 20, 2004, during Holtz’s final regular-season match.

The two institutions declared that they would each penalize their respective football programs for their unsportsmanlike behavior by refusing any invitations to bowl games, as opposed to ending his career at a post-season bowl game as was anticipated.

Holtz noted that it was ironic that both he and former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes would be remembered for “getting into a brawl at the Clemson game” during his final press conference as South Carolina’s head coach. Holtz also made reference to his role in Steve Spurrier’s hiring as his replacement.
