In 2014, Moritz Wagner kickstarted his basketball career with Alba Berlin in the under-19 Bundesliga in Germany, where he won the German Championship together with his teammates.

Moritz Wagner then moved to the United States to play college basketball with Michigan Wolverines through his junior year. Moritz Wagner was supposed to be drafted in the 2017 NBA draft but withdrew and returned to Michigan.

In the following year, Moritz Wagner was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 25th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. Moritz Wagner was named the 2018 Big Ten Conference men’s basketball tournament MVP the following season.
