The American-born player played high school football at Fairhope high school in Alabama, before he made his way to Duke University.

As a high school senior, Leonard recorded 1,900 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and 500 rushing yards.
During his freshman year at Duke University, Leonard played in seven games, starting one, and recorded 2,967 yards, threw for 20 touchdowns and had only six interceptions, and 13 rushing touchdowns.
He also completed 37 of 62 passes for 381 yards.
In his sophomore year, he was named the starting quarterback.
In 2022, Leonard won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the Military Bowl.
