Ed Burns is an American novelist, writer and producer.
He was born Edward P. Burns on January 29, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Burns attended Catholic schools as a boy and graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore. He worked as a Baltimore City detective for 20 years.

Following his retirement from the police force, Burns worked as a public school teacher in Baltimore for 7 years before retiring.
Amid Burns’ 20 years on the force, he met police reporter David Simon and the two would go on to collaborate on The Corner (2000), The Wire (2002) and Generation Kill (2008), The Plot Against America (2020) and We Own This City (2022).
He also co-wrote the book The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner City Neighborhood with Simon, which Simon later developed into the Emmy Award-winning HBO miniseries The Corner.
