Harriet May Norton, his mother, was the daughter of Congregational preacher Rev. Milton J. Norton and Louise Hill. Prior to her marriage, she was an Oberlin College graduate who aspired to be a missionary. Tom Wolfe, a journalist, called her “a bright woman with a controlling will.”

Noyce was born on December 12, 1927, in Burlington, Iowa, to the Rev. Ralph Brewster Noyce and his four boys. His father received degrees from Doane College, Oberlin College, and the Chicago Theological Seminary, as well as a Rhodes Scholarship nomination.

Elizabeth and the kids would spend their summers there. During the summer, Robert would pay a visit, although he continued to work at Intel. In 1974, they divorced.
