In 1980, Hogan started competing in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he earned the moniker “Ichiban” (, “Number One”) from the sport’s Japanese fans.

While still a member of the WWF, Hogan made his debut on May 13, 1980.

Over the following few years, he periodically toured the nation, competing against a diverse range of opponents, including Abdullah the Butcher and Tatsumi Fujinami.

Hogan used a very different set of wrestling techniques when fighting in Japan, concentrating on more intricate, traditional holds and maneuvers as opposed to the power-based, brawling style American fans had come to expect from him.
