Why Did Lee Hall Write Billy Elliot?

Lee Hall had written the popular Billy Elliot because he wanted to share the story of his childhood struggles with the world.

Hall had been through alot while growing up and he felt portraying his story via film or stage might be boring, so he decided to write instead.

Who Is Lee Hall?

Lee Hall is a British playwright, screenwriter, and lyricist, known for writing the book and lyrics for the stage musical version of Billy Elliot as well as the screenplay for the movie Billy Elliot.

Born on September 20 1966, in Newcastle, United Kingdom, Hall is also the brain behind the script for plays The Pitmen Painters (2007), and Rocketman (2019).

Hall studied English literature at Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge and Benfield School in Walkergate.

Hall began his career as a playwright in 1997, with the airing of his radio play, Spoonface Steinberg, on BBC Radio 4.

Since then, Hall refused to rest on his laurels, writing several books, musicals and screenplays such as the film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse, an adaptation of Nigel Slater’s Autobiography Toast.

His other works include the Elton John’s biopic Rocketman, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Down and Out in Paris and London, and Hippie Hippie Shake, which based on Richard Neville’s memoir Hippie Hippie Shake: The Dreams, the Trips, the Trials, the Love-ins, the Screw Ups: The Sixties.

Hall has received multiple awards and nominations including the Pearson Playwrights’ Scheme Award, the British Independent Film Award, the Laurence Olivier Award, the Tony Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the BAFTA Award, an Academy Award, and a Satellite Award.
