In Alba, an Italian town famous for its hazelnut production, Pietro Ferrero ran a bakery. He sold the first 300-kilogram (660 lb) batch of Gianduja-derived pasta in 1946. Initially offered as a solid block, Ferrero began offering Supercrema gianduja in 1951.

Michele Ferrero, the son of Ferrero, redesigned Supercrema gianduja in 1963 with the goal of distributing it across Europe. Its ingredients were changed, and the name was changed to “Nutella.” On April 20, 1964, the first container of Nutella was shipped from the Alba facility. The product became a huge hit right away and is still in high demand.

Sen. Yves Daudigny of France proposed raising the tariff on palm oil from €100 to €400 per tonne in 2012. The levy was called “the Nutella tax” in the media because palm oil, one of the key ingredients in Nutella, is subject to a 20 percent tax.
