The artist and printmaker Zarina Hashmi, also known as Zarina, was an Indian-American who lived in New York City. Her artistic endeavors included sculpting, printing, and sketching.

In order to elicit a spiritual response from the viewer, she associated herself with the Minimalist movement and used abstract and geometric forms in her artwork.

Zarina Rashid was born on July 16, 1937, in Aligarh, British India, to Fahmida Begum, a housewife, and Sheikh Abdur Rashid, a professor at Aligarh Muslim University. At Aligarh Muslim University, Zarina earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with honors in 1958.

She then investigated printmaking methods in Thailand, served as an apprentice for Stanley William Hayter at the Atelier 17 studio in Paris, and studied with Japanese artist Toshi Yoshida in Tokyo.

She eventually relocated to New York City where she now works.

At the affiliated Women’s Center for Learning in the 1980s, Zarina ran papermaking classes in addition to serving on the board of the New York Feminist Art Institute. She also contributed to the “Third World Women” issue while she was a member of the editorial board for the Heresies feminist art journal.
