Astra Sharma was born on September 11, 1995, in Singapore. Her father, Devdutt Sharma, is a Singaporean Indian who was a high jumper. He also worked as an acoustic engineer and was an artillery officer at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Astra Sharma’s mother, Susan Tan, is a Singaporean Chinese who was a sprinter from CHIJ Saint Theresa’s Convent. She has a younger brother Ashwin who is a tennis player. Astra Sharma was raised in Singapore before her parents relocated to Perth, Western Australia in 2005.

Astra Sharma attended Applecross Senior High School. She won the Australian Open Wildcard Playoff in December 2017 which was her main-draw entry into the 2018 Australian Open. Sharma made her ITF Circuit debut in October 2011.

Astra Sharma has career-high WTA rankings of 84 in singles and 91 in doubles. She won one singles title and three doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She also won seven singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
