Vanessa rose to prominence in 2002 with the release of her instantly catchy debut single, “A Thousand Miles,” from her album Be Not Nobody, a breakthrough hit that has remained the singer-signature songwriter’s song to this day.

Carlton revealed the little-known story behind the beloved tune in  VICE’s “The Story of…” mini-documentary, which turns out was written about a fellow Juilliard student whom Carlton had a crush on while attending the school back in the mid-90s.

The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2002, becoming the year’s sixth most-played song and earning Grammy Award nominations for “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).”

“Be Not Nobody,” which was released in April 2002, debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Following her success, Carlton continued to release albums for the rest of her career. She released Harmonium (2004) and Heroes & Thieves (2005).

In November 2012, Carlton released the Christmas EP Hear the Bells, and on October 23, 2015, she released her fifth studio album, Liberman.
